Beach Read by Emily Henry
Emily Henry’s books have gone viral on Tik Tok, especially People We Meet on Vacation (which is incredible BTW), and I wanted to read more. I picked up Beach Read this month and couldn’t wait to dive in.
January Jones is a successful romance writer, but everything she’s ever known about love feels like a lie after she finds out her father had an affair. With her agent constantly bugging her for a new manuscript, January decides to spend the summer at her dad’s second house. Her plan to hunker down until her next book is written starts as planned, until she discovers her neighbour is Augustus Everett, fellow writer and her college enemy.
I love Beach Read almost as much as I love People We Meet on Vacation. The trope is enemies to lovers, which I love because it’s so exciting. The romance aspects teased the reader. Henry gives a little then takes it away, and you can’t stop reading because you want more. The writing is great and the pace of the book was perfect. This is a must-read if you like romance books.
Daisy Jones & The Six
If you haven’t read a Taylor Reid Jenkins book then you’re missing out. Jenkins is one of my favourite authors and she doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to writing. She could rewrite the dictionary and I’d read it. I’ve read her other books and recently received Daisy Jones & The Six as a gift, and I was ecstatic to read it.
Daisy Jones & The Six is written in interview style and tells the origin stories of singer Daisy Jones and rock band The Six, and how they came together to become one of the biggest bands in the world.
Everything about Daisy Jones & The Six is compelling. The different narrators, the chapter formats, the complex characters. It’s exciting, real and I couldn’t put it down. I usually am ready to jump right into a new book as soon as I finish another, but I needed to take a few days after reading Daisy Jones & The Six to absorb it all. It’s a fantastic book and I highly recommend everyone to read it.
Portrait of a Scotsman by Evie Dunmore
Portrait of a Scotsman by Evie Dunmore is the third book in the A League of Extraordinary Women series. The historic romance tells the story of Hattie Greenfield, a bank heiress who finds herself engaged accidentally to the dark and mysterious Lucian Blackstone. Hattie’s high society upbringing clashes with Lucian’s murky past, and the pair discover parts of the other that no one else knows. Is the marriage going to work or was it fated to be doomed from the start?
I love this series so much, and the first two novels are some of my favourites. Portrait of a Scotsman fell short compared to the others, but nevertheless the story was intriguing. There was lots of romance, mystery, action and just enough intrigue to keep you reading until the end. I’d recommend this novel if you like romance, high society England and history (the series is about the women’s rights movement.)
