Summer is my favourite time of year, but I must admit that I love fall fashion more than anything. It’s so fun to shop for cute coats, sweaters, skirts and pants. Lately, I’ve become obsessed with the idea of a fall capsule wardrobe.
I used to be the type to shop for pieces that I didn’t necessarily need until I realized the beauty in shopping for staple pieces. The idea of a fall capsule wardrobe is that you have pieces that you can mix and match easily for the season, allowing you to create plenty of outfits.
Of course, you can still have bold and trendy pieces with a fall capsule wardrobe, but make sure they are pieces that you absolutely love and will wear time and time again. The other great thing about capsule wardrobes is the pieces never go out of style, so you can wear them year after year.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe Pieces You Need
Coats
Fall weather is tricky. It’s chilly in the morning, yet warm in the afternoon, and some days are so cold you think it might snow. Have two or three coats that you can switch between based on the weather and that you can layer.
Shirt jackets are a staple for me and I can’t get enough of them. They’re perfect for layering and a great option for when it’s not cold enough for a heavy coat, but too cold to go without one. Shirt jackets are a staple for fall, and I recommend having a neutral shirt jacket, as well as a patterned one. There are so many different shirt jackets out there, so take the time to browse and find one that suits your style.
Trench coats are another great lightweight style for fall, plus they’re extremely stylish and come in different colours and styles. Go for the classic tan trench coat, or add texture to your closet with a leather trench.
Bomber coats are especially trendy this fall. A leather bomber jacket elevates any outfit and pairs well with almost anything. I bought an oversized plaid bomber jacket from Old Navy and it’s become one of my favourite fall jackets. The colours are still neutral, so I can wear it with many outfits. This is a scenario where you can add fun, patterned jackets to your wardrobe.
My go-to coat for when it gets colder is a blazer coat. They’re great for transitioning from fall to winter, and are warm to protect you from the fall chill. These come in many different colours and patterns, so it’s easy to find one that fits your style.
Sweaters
You can never go wrong with having a few sweaters in your fall capsule wardrobe. There are so many out there from slim fitting sweaters to oversized sweaters. Have a variety that you can wear whether it’s to work or a casual day with friends. Here’s a sweater checklist to help you get started on building your fall capsule wardrobe:
✔️ Neutral oversized sweatshirt or hoodie
✔️ Oversized knit sweater
✔️ Cardigan
✔️ Turtleneck
✔️ Crew neck sweater
Long Sleeve Tops
Have a few long sleeved tops in your fall capsule wardrobe to layer. They look great with work pants, skirts and jeans. They are so versatile and there are so many different styles out there. Here are a few ideas on shirts to add to your fall capsule wardrobe:
✔️ Knit turtleneck
✔️ Long sleeve knit bodysuit
✔️ Neutral slim fit long sleeve shirt
✔️ Long sleeve blouses
Once you have the basics, you can add patterned or “fun” pieces to accentuate your wardrobe.
Skirts & Dresses
My go-to fall look is skirts, tights and a cute top. I highly recommend having a few fall skirts in your mix to wear on days where you feel like dressing up a bit. Plaid skirts are always a great look in fall, as well as leather, suede or pleated skirts. I recommend having at least one solid black skirt that you can dress up or down, and style with basically anything. Midi skirts are also great for fall, as they keep your legs warm and you can wear them with sweaters or knits.
Dresses are always great to have on hand, especially with the holidays coming up. Midi and sweater dresses are especially great for fall.
Pants
You can never go wrong with a great pair of jeans. I recommend having a black pair and a light or medium wash pair, as you can style them in so many ways. Choose your favourite cut and style, and add them to your capsule wardrobe.
Trousers or slacks are also necessary if you work in a business environment. I like to have a pair of black and brown pants, and then pops of colour or patterns.
If you like keeping things casual, add comfy pants that you can wear out of the house to your capsule wardrobe. Try knit pants or utility pants as an alternative to jeans.
Shoes
There are so many great shoe options for the fall. Ankle boots are a must-have in your capsule wardrobe and there are so many options. I suggest having black, brown or cream, as these colours will go with most outfits. The best part is you can choose how high you want the heel, and if you want leather or suede. If you prefer a tall boot, go with that.
Loafers are also great for fall. They’re comfy yet stylish and can be worn casually or at the office. Closed-toe heels are also necessary for work or days where you want to feel more elevated. My go-to is a close-toed block heel, as they’re comfy yet still more dressed up than a flat shoe.
For days where you want to be comfy, go with a shearling-lined boot. Many people go for Uggs, but there are plenty of similar inexpensive options out there.
