You’re missing out if you don’t have a capsule wardrobe yet. I’m currently working on building my spring capsule wardrobe and, honestly, it’s a bit overwhelming.
You might be asking, what is a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a wardrobe of a few functional pieces that you can mix and match from day to night, so you always have something to wear. Having seasonal capsule wardrobes creates variation between seasons, and it makes getting dressed so easy.
Another thing to consider when creating a capsule wardrobe is your lifestyle. Are you a student? Do you work? You should have a few pieces that to work, out with friends, a night out etc. Of course, all your pieces won’t have this variability, but the goal of a capsule wardrobe is to make getting dressed easy.

Tips For Building A Spring Capsule Wardrobe
Pick a Colour Palette
The first step is picking a colour palette. You don’t need to stick to it strictly, however, it’s good to have an idea of what colours you like and that look good on you. If you like neutrals, stick with neutrals. If you like dark colours, go with that.
It’s all up to you and your likes, but the important thing is having colours that pair nicely together. Remember that the goal of a capsule wardrobe is having items that mix and match, so pick colours and items that you can pair together.
Pick A Budget
Remember that you don’t need to buy everything all at once. In fact, it’s recommended that you don’t do this. Building a capsule wardrobe takes time, and you shouldn’t be spending tons of money just for the sake of it.
My rule is to buy things that I love as I see them. Whether that’s one item a month or five items. You should also be investing in quality items that will last you years. Lower priced items may be attractive, but chances are they aren’t high quality and won’t last more than a few months. This is the perfect opportunity to invest in items that may be a little higher priced, but will last.
Start With Basics
Capsule wardrobes are essentially a lot of basics from tops, sweaters and jackets. These are pieces that you’ll wear often. Starting to build a capsule wardrobe is overwhelming, especially if you don’t know where to start which is why I recommend looking at the items that you own and see what you’re missing.
I think everyone should own a basic white and black t shirt. These can be dressed up or down and you’ll get a lot of use out them. You should also have at least one jacket for every occasion, so a winter jacket, a rain jacket, a lightweight jacket, a blazer, etc.
Starting with these basics will ease you into the experience. Think of building a capsule wardrobe as a puzzle. You need all the pieces, so you need to look at what you have and figure out what you’re missing so that you can complete the puzzle.
Stay Away From Patterns and Trends
Again, the key to building a capsule wardrobe is having items that mix and match, and patterns are often hard to match. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have any patterns at all. I definitely love patterns and have a few in my spring capsule wardrobe, but having too many can be overwhelming. Patterns should be statement pieces, which I’ll get into below.
Stay away from trendy pieces as well. Trends come and go, and they often involve pieces that you’ll wear once or twice and then shove to the back of your closet. It’s ok to have a few trendy pieces, but only if they are pieces that you truly love and will wear multiple times. Don’t fall for the trend trap. This leads into my next point…
Ask yourself, “Will I Really Wear This?” And “Where Will I Wear This?”
When shopping, you need to ask yourself “will I wear this?” and “where will I wear this?” If you don’t know where you’ll wear it then chances are you don’t need it. You need to love the pieces that you invest in. If you’re not sure, don’t buy it.
When shopping, I like to hold onto items for a while as I walk around the store to see if I truly like them. If possible, wait a few days before buying the item because then you can see if you’re still thinking about the item days later. If you’ve forgotten about it then you probably didn’t need it.
Add a Few Statement Pieces
Remember what I said about patterns? They’re statement pieces. Add a few statement pieces into your capsule wardrobe. Items that “wow” you. These can be bold pops of colour, patterns, trendy pieces, special occasion pieces, etc. Just make sure they’re items you love and that you’ll wear. Think of statement pieces as a treat. They’re add-ons to your capsule wardrobe.
