Olaplex Review: Are Olaplex No. 4 and No. 5 Worth the Price?

To all the hair care extraordinaires, this post is for you. Olaplex is the “it” brand of the moment and everyone is raving about the benefits of Olaplex’s hair care line. But, are Olaplex products worth the price or is it just another fad? Keeping reading for my Olaplex review!

Some of my posts contain affiliate links. If you click on an affiliate link and buy something, I may receive a very small commission. It does NOT result in additional charges to you or cost you anything extra.

About Olaplex

Olaplex brands itself as being able to repair all types of damaged hair and damaged bonds with its patented chemistry. Hair is made up of bonds, which essentially give hair its strength, structure, and stability.

Damaged hair is a result of those bonds being broken due to too much heat, brushing aggressively, UV rays, and chemicals. This causes hair to become frizzy, dry, thin, and all those other awful adjectives that we don’t want to use to describe our hair.

Olaplex works to keep bonds intact and repairs damaged bonds. The products are great for all types of hair, but are especially great for damaged, colour-treated hair.

There are six products in the Olaplex hair care line:

No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment

No. 3 Hair Perfector

No. 4 Bond Maintenance™ Shampoo

No. 5 Bond Maintenance™ Conditioner

No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Crème

No. 7 Bonding Oil

All Olaplex products are $38 CAD.

Olaplex Review

Olaplex Review. Olaplex No. 4 Review. Olaplex No. 5 Review.

I have been on a journey to find the best shampoo and conditioner for months now, and I had really high hopes for Olaplex. I’ve seen so many stellar Olaplex reviews and was convinced that these products would be amazing for my hair. I purchased the Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner to try out.

After the first wash, I was in love with it. My hair felt soft, moisturized, and bouncy. I really couldn’t believe how amazing it was. The trick is that you only need to use a tiny drop because it lathers a lot. This also means that the product will last you a long time, which is great!

However, after a few more washes my hair took a turn for the worst. I have natural hair that is short, thick, and oily. I typically wash my hair every second day, and I almost always have to use dry shampoo on the second day to control the greasiness.

My hair became so unbelievably greasy after using the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner for a month. I thought maybe I was still using too much product even though I was using tiny drops, so I tried using even less and it still didn’t make a difference.

My hair also had product buildup after using the shampoo and conditioner which left it feeling like I hadn’t washed the product out of my hair. My hair looked greasy, weighed down, and flat.

Honestly, I think my hair was too healthy for the Olaplex products which is why they caused my hair to get oily. I’ve never had dry or damaged hair, so I didn’t really need moisturizing products like Olaplex.

Even though I had a bad experience with the Olaplex products, I would still recommend them because I think they would work wonders for people with extremely damaged and dry hair. If you need an extremely moisturizing shampoo, then this is the product for you. Unfortunately, I think the extra moisture was what caused my hair to get greasy.

If you have oily hair, these might not be the best shampoo and conditioner for you. Everyone’s hair is different and what doesn’t work for someone might work great for someone else. Sadly, Olaplex products didn’t work for me, but I have no doubts that they will be the saving grace for someone else.

Have you tried any Olaplex products before?

Omg thank you for the truly honest review! I have been wondering if Olaplex is worth it, but now I’m having second thoughts after reading your review. I appreciate the honesty!

Thank you! I was super disappointed with it, but I would still recommend it if you have damaged hair! It was super moisturizing, but I think that’s what made my hair oily.

Interesting review- most rave about it! I’ve used Olaplex when staying at a friends and it makes my hair feel silky smooth but think it’s because I dye my hair a lot 😂

Yeah I’ve heard lots of good things about it from people who have dyed hair or damaged hair!

They are pretty expensive! I think the products are worth it if you have damaged or dyed hair, but it’s not really worth it if you have no hair issues.

Thank you for sharing all the details, both good and bad. It’s not for me, if it makes hair oily 🙂

This might be the first time I have read comments about Olaplex that aren’t just “singing their praises” – and I kind of love that? It’s good to have a real, honest perspective out there too – and one that isn’t just perfect. This was really helpful to read, so I know to do thorough research on the Olaplex line before making final decisions!

I’m glad you liked the post! I bought the products without doing any research because I’d seen so many people raving about them and it just didn’t work out for me. I can see why the products would be great for certain types of hair, but unfortunately they didn’t work my hair type and that’s okay too.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear they didn’t work for you! 🙁 I haven’t tried these products yet but I have similar hair to you so I might have to avoid them! Thanks for sharing this review!

A friend recommended not using it every day or every time I washed my hair as my primary shampoo/conditioner. I do this and alternate between the two systems. I also wash mine every two to three days using dry shampoo in between as needed. Maybe try only using it once a week to prevent the oily results, but still enjoy the benefits of repairing dry/stressed hair. I’ve used it for about a month (4-5 times) and I am loving it so far!

Hello, thank you for sharing. I recently started using Opalex and have noticed a significant increase in oil at my scalp. I do not plan on using this product anymore as I do not believe it works for me either. I am sure it is a good product, just not for me. Did you notice a change after not using it? Thank you

It made my hair super oily and so much build up. I swapped it out for Pureology and the difference was crazy. My hair was so soft and felt so clean.

Could you please tell me what shampoo are you using now? I have the same problem, oily fine hair that needs to be washed each other day. Thanks!

I use the Pureology Hydration shampoo! It makes my hair feel so clean, and the first wash after using Olaplex was incredible!

I also switched from Olaplex to Pureology. I love it so much. I have a highly sensitive scalp and always have build up. I have also had to alternate prescription shampoo with my Pureology and have never had an issue.
